Good things!

I've started working with Gallery Poulsen in Copenhagen and will be in a group show there opening this Friday. Powhida and I will also be doing a collaborative show there in August/September and we are looking forward to the endeavor. I have also started working with Lesley Heller Workspace here in New York and am currently in the midst of production for a solo show with her this coming April...

Oil painting is an invention from the 14th century. Video art was born in the 1960's, but to express artistically on paper is a several thousand-year-old tradition. When working with paper as a medium the artistic creative process is often direct and immediate. It is a revealing method that shows what the artist is capable of creating with his hand and a piece of paper - right here, right now.

This exhibition at Gallery Poulsen examines the skills within a group of New York artists. They are all known as painters who express themselves with color on canvas, but frequently they also explore the wide possibilities of the paper. Gallery Poulsen is very proud to present great works on paper produced by these prominent names: Michael Bevilacqua, Daniel Davidson, Aaron Johnson, Mi Ju, Erik Parker, William Powhida, Tom Sanford, Alfred Steiner, Jade Townsend, Eric White and Michael Anderson.

The artists will not be present in Copenhagen during the exhibition, but will be happy to do interviews through Skype.

With Drawn to You - 'Works on Paper from New York' Gallery Poulsen has increased its appetite for the Big Apple and has reserved most of the 2012 exhibition program for New York artists. I will have a piece for sale in the Spread the Word auction and benefit in Los Angeles on December 17th. You can buy tickets to the event here. This was a really fun project for a great cause. SMUDGE a one-act play by two-time Emmy winner, Rachel Axler is a dark comedy exploring the question: Can love conquer all? A couple struggles with the limits of love and cheesecake in the face of giving birth to a "smudge" instead of the expected child. The dark whimsy of this play fits perfectly with Townsend, whose work explores themes of displacement and allegory.

The Dead Horse Inn

For the past 3 weeks we've been helping Duke Riley re-build the Dead Horse Inn. Guests were dropped off on the edge of the Belt parkway and led through the woods to the tavern to partake in drinks for a nickel, steamed mussels, boxing and the usual hijinx. Below are some snapshots of the build-out and set up. Here is what Duke has to say about it:

This is not an art project. Well…not really.

My birthday is this week and it is also the 5th anniversary of the Dead Horse Inn, which will re-open for one night, this Saturday, June 18th, 2011.

HISTORY
From 1891 to 1907, Plumb Island was occupied by a group of homesteaders who set up a series of shacks and tents that eventually developed into bars and inns. Because the island was outside New York City’s jurisdiction, alcohol and tobacco were tax-free. In 1907, the US army was sent by the city to break up the party and evict the homesteaders. The land was then leased to former judge Winfield Overton, who allowed the homesteaders to return shortly after his arrival. The judge quickly declared himself ruler of the island and began organizing boxing matches, which were also illegal in New York at the time. The US military was then called again to “depose the dictator” they had unwittingly installed.
In the 1930s, Robert Moses evicted the last homesteaders, demolished all of the remaining structures, and connected the island to the mainland by a strip of highway and a bridge now known as Exit 9B on the Belt Parkway, turning it into a run-down rest stop with public bathrooms. In recent years, the island’s parking area has become a regular rendezvous for swingers, and the surrounding woods have become a cruising spot for gay men.

MISSION
The Dead Horse Inn is a temporary bar that exists for only one night every five years, providing diversion, libation, and fresh crabs for a nickel. It was built from the excavated ruins of the shantytown that actually occupied the island from 1891 to 1935 and reclaimed flotsam from the surrounding area. It is meant to draw a connection between the current lay of the land and the similarly transgressive spirit of its former inhabitants. Plumb Island has always been a place where people socialize in ways otherwise prohibited in New York City. The human condition unfolds outside prescribed social boundaries, reacting and looking for free spaces, creating culture on the fringe of the city, where the land meets the water.

Well... yesterday I severed the final tie in my relationship with Priska Juschka Fine Art. Kitty Joe and I filled an 18' box truck with my work and distributed it between the drawing studio and a warehouse in Linden, New Jersey. After more than a year of feeling like I didn't fit with her stable of artists and being frustrated with the relationship, I was seriously considering moving on. Then, after I found out about the gallery's situation with Dana Melamed, I realized that I would be an asshole if I didn't leave. Too shady for my blood, not to mention confirmed suspicions. So... here we are, released from the dead weight and ready to try my hand at being a free agent. It's a good feeling.

This is the installation I've been working on for a group exhibition at the McNay Museum
in San Antonio, Texas. It opens on February 16th and runs until May 8th. It's a pretty great show with great artists and San Antonio is an incredible city with incredible people. The 13 artists and artist collectives in New Image Sculpture create unique visions of the world we encounter on a daily basis. Regardless of what they make or how they make it, in the end these artists transform ordinary stuff into objects of extraordinary engagement.

A full-color, 128-page book surveying the work of these artists, with text by the exhibition’s organizer René Paul Barilleaux and critic Eleanor Heartney, accompanies the New Image Sculpture exhibition.

We have a ton of photos to share from our incredible week, but since we got back late last night and I have to be on a plane for Miami in a couple hours, all I have time for is a sneak peek. ... at least for a little while. With generous funding from the McNay, i've been able to rent some space at Jonathan Schipper's shop on Kingsland. I'm starting production now for a February installation at the McNay. It feels good to be in a shop again!
The fat king in progress (he will end up looking a little bit like this or this) with the armatures for the "eye poke" dudes behind. These two will end up being cast in aluminum.

This is another study of an element of an installation I'm exhibiting at the McNay Museum in San Antonio in February. I'm beginning production in October. It will be totally new territory for me working with metal casting and mechanics (the two figures alternately poke each other in the eye and the tools will move vertically). Anxiously excited......

August is slow. Slow at work. Slow in the brain. Slow at everything. Here's what I've been up to:

On the mornings that Kitty Joe and I don't have work, (which seem to be most mornings lately as the company i freelance for is dead slow and Kitty Joe works noon to 10pm most days) we have been going to park at 8 am with giant jars of ice tea to brainstorm and work out the details of an upcoming project. I guess you could say that it is less of a project and more of a "create-your-own-get-out-of-this-soul-sucking-city-dream-art-artist-residency-project-thing". I don't want to give away too many details as of yet, so let's just say we've been dreaming and working on it for awhile now and the reality of it just gets farther and farther away. It's not the large and complicated build the project will require or the vast amount of art work and writing that will be made during the project's duration that is daunting, the trouble is looking down the pipeline at trying to find funding, the seemingly endless amounts of letter writing, elbow rubbing, explaining and all of that organizational shit that i so dearly hate.
But you gotta do what you gotta do... even if it never pans out. So be it.

James Case Leal is my hero. I haven't hung out with James since we met in Cuba over a year ago so it was great to meet up with with him recently and see what he's been up to. And, HOLY SHIT (no pun intended) it is amazing!!! He's been preparing an exhibition at the Lutheran church across the street from McGolrick park in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. James knows the Minister from around the neighborhood and because Sunday service is held in the basement during the summer months due to the over heated sanctuary, the congregation has agreed to let him build an installation in the sanctuary over the course of 6 weeks. I got to see it in progress and it looks unbelievably amazing! If it is not the best show the fall opening season has to offer I'll be surprised. No gallery representation, minimal funding, help from friends and community... Quality DIY with really impressive results. And he has two kids! It will be open to the Public the last week of September. I'll keep you posted on the specifics...

Sailing with Duke Riley. It seems like the conversations between Duke and I lately have been dominated by bitching about how we've both been stuck indoors most of the summer and how much it sucks. Cabin fever in the summer is stupid. But he finally had a break in his insane schedule and invited Kitty Joe, Lara Allen and I out to the 26' sailboat he has stashed on the East River. It's easy to get stuck in ruts in this city and finding ways and time to look at things differently can be hard to come by. Sailing down the East River to Hoffman Island, just past the Verrazano, was just the break I needed. And aside from getting stuck on some rocks off the island and having to run away from the harbor police, it was really peaceful experience. Absolutely incredible.

I have work in group show opening next week with some old friends of mine from Dresden. The exhibition runs from August 2nd through October 7th at the Hopkins Hall Gallery at Ohio State University in Columbus Ohio. With an opening reception on the 13th.
Melissa Vogley-Woods and Tina Beifuss have put together an excellent show, I highly recommend checking it out!

The hike into Blue from the campground (above). After tearing my ACL a while back, this was my first solid week without the brace. I'd be damned if i was going to wear that stupid contraption up there. Maybe i'm being stubborn, but we played it safe and my knee held up fine and only really buckled once. It's getting stronger! No more robo-leg for me.... I hope.

Way back in the not so distant past, on one of those rare occasions when I sold some work and Kitty Joe and I had some money that we could spend on things other than rice and beans and rent, we had the fortunate wherewithal to purchase plane tickets to meet my Pops and Brother to go fishing in the mountains. This is a place that my family frequented every summer when i was a kid. I was last able to make it there 3 years ago and was reminded how important to me this place is. The closest thing to heaven i know. Great fishin' too.

“With this show, we desire to illuminate and challenge the parallels between the disciplines of art and magic(k). Both disciplines share belief systems that rely on a priori knowledge and metaphysics. In order to explore the parallels, we have sought out artifacts of practices rather than traditional art works. The difference between an artifact and an art work is dependent on our perception of an illusion or delusion. The distinction occurs through the acceptance of an idea, a value system that elevates common materials into works of art. In the art market, art achieves phenomenal values akin to precious metals and stones; the artist, the collector, the dealer, critics, and the auction houses transform ordinary materials with little intrinsic value into desirous objects. Creating the commonly agreed upon preciousness of art describes another form of magik, turning earth into gold, and in the art market, it is made possible. In the broader art world, artists can work in futility to achieve the desired transformation of their ideas, intentions into something of value, but that transformation is impossible without the belief of others.

“This show, and it is indeed a show, not an exhibition, presents a range of operators seeking tangible results; materially, socially, or spiritually. The operators include skeptics and believers whose work acknowledges the gap between what is and what could be.

GLOBAL / NATIONAL - The Order of Chaos is an exhibition that “addresses the anxieties of economics, environmental tragedies, and societies of control that define the chaos of globalization. It explores these social issues in an aesthetic way to demystify the notion of art only as an ornamental production. This vision includes images from abstraction to figuration, from direct messages to esoteric thoughts,” explains Co-Founder/Artistic Director Papo Colo. The exhibition investigates how local artists from a variety of backgrounds are placed in relation to the rest of the world. Seen through a global lens, this exhibition explores the multiple cultures that populate our general culture and how the local and national are inextricably linked to the global.

This exhibition examines the tensions of uncontrollable forces that are dislocating our society to redefine a new civilization. The artworks reflect how the national contains global concerns, searching inside our culture to project our global position. This exhibition tells the story of those concerns and new ways in which we can order the chaos.
